Week 7 Classroom Management
Name: Sydney Bauman
Date of field experiences reported: 10/3-10/7
Time spent: 8:22-9:57 A.M.
Sequence of Events.
After finishing up the third section of the chapter, the students were given homework time and then a day to work on their study guide. Following the study day, the students were given a test covering three sections of chapter two. Then on Friday, the day before Fall Break, the students were given time to complete any unfinished assignments. This allowed them to get these assignments completed since Friday was the last day of the quarter.
Elaboration of One or Two Significant Episodes.
10/5/22
During both periods, the students were handed their study guides and told to quietly work on them. In addition to working on their study guides, they could work on their other assignments that are due in this class. The teacher made it clear that they were to work quietly and that if they had a question, they could raise their hand and either she or I would be available to answer it. While the students were working, the teacher gave them the opportunity to listen to music with a few stipulations. The students could listen to music if they kept it at an appropriate volume and if they only had one earbud in that way, if the teacher needed to talk to them, they would be able to hear her.

During passing periods, the teacher stands outside of her classroom to watch the hallway. She does this most of the time, but not always. When we were standing in the hallway on Wednesday, a student was caught walking to class after the bell had rung. The teacher decided to confront the student about always being tardy. The student, in return, kept walking into the classroom. This is when the teacher yelled the name of the student. After getting the attention of the student, she made it clear that she wanted to talk in the hallway to keep the other students from hearing her. The student returned to the hallway, where the teacher asked why they were always late to her class. This is when the teacher found out that the student had to walk across the school because of their previous class being on the opposite side of the building.
Analysis of Episode(s).
10/5/22
In this situation, the teacher is giving the students the opportunity to do something they enjoy while working on their math, which most of them have expressed that they do not enjoy. This is something the teacher does but does not have to do. In allowing this, she continues to hold the same expectation she always has, which is that they will actually be working and doing so quietly. In my opinion, allowing the students to listen to music can be both positive and negative. It may be positive in that it keeps them on task and encourages them to work because she is allowing them to do something they enjoy doing. It may help with gaining mutual respect between the teacher and her students. However, it may be a negative because it can be more of a distraction than something that helps them focus. Students tend to blare their music, which then becomes a distraction to not only themselves but to the entire class.

Here, the teacher is giving the student an opportunity to have a conversation with her and to explain their case as to why they are always tardy to class. Instead of doing this, the student decided to ignore the teacher and walk into the classroom, which then caused a bigger scene than what it needed to be. In my opinion, the teacher handled this situation in a fair way. The student was not giving her the time of day, which in turn got their name yelled out. I do not think the teacher should have yelled out the name of the student, but she did not have many other options. She could have quietly tried to get the attention of the student, but when she did this the first time, the student kept walking. The student was disrespectful to the teacher and most likely got embarrassed when the teacher yelled their name out. This could have been avoided if the student would have given the teacher the respect that she should be getting.
Week Overview
The days of this week looked very different from one another. Some were spent on instruction while others were quietly working, whether that be on an assignment or the test the students took this week. Then, on Friday, the week concluded with a work day to get any past assignments done. The main thing I did this week in the classroom was help students answer any questions they had in order to help prepare them for the test they had.
