Field Experience Week 9 (Week 15)

  • Week 9 Assessment for Learning, of Learning, and as Learning

Name: Sydney Bauman

Date of field experiences reported: 11/28-12/2

Time spent: 8:22-9:57 A.M.

  • Sequence of Events.

Monday and Tuesday were spent learning a new section of the chapter. On Wednesday, the students were given an assignment that they were instructed to work on during the entire period. Thursday was similar to Wednesday in that the students were given an assignment that they were instructed to work on in class. The Thursday assignment was in preparation for the quiz that was given to the students on Friday.

While my mentor teacher was instructing, she would include "try it" problems throughout the instruction. At the start of the period, students were instructed to take out their notes. The teacher then began discussing an example problem. Once they worked through the example problem as a class, they were then instructed to begin working on the next two "try it" problems. When the students were individually working on the problems, my mentor teacher walked around the classroom checking the progress students had made, keeping students on task, and answering any questions the students had. This is a prominent way that my mentor teacher assesses her students while they are learning.

Prior to Wednesday, the beginning of the week was spent learning a section from the book. In the Algebra II class, the students were learning about long and synthetic division. When Wednesday came around, the students were given a homework assignment that they were instructed to do on the computer during their class period. This allowed students to demonstrate what they had learned on Monday and Tuesday.

This is a simple way to incorporate the idea of "always be assessing" in the classroom. In addition to the idea of "always be assessing," this allows the students to individually represent their understanding. Some students learn best when working through things individually, and this allows them to do so. My mentor teacher does a good job at observing the thought processes of the students as well as answering any questions they may have. One additional thing that would benefit the students while observing their solutions and answering their questions would be to ask them assessing and advancing questions.

11/30/22

Assigning homework is one of the most common ways to assess students. In the classroom I am in, the majority of the homework assignments take place on the computer. Assignments on the computer have both positives and negatives. They are positive in that the teacher does not have to worry about losing papers prior to grading them. With these specific assignments, the students are given the option to view an example when solving the different problems. If students are to follow the step-by-step examples that are given, then it raises the question of whether they are actually learning or simply copying. This then impacts whether or not the homework assignment is an accurate assessment of what the students have learned.

  • Week Overview

This week was a standard one with no surprises. The students learned new material, worked on assignments, and completed a quiz. I was involved in the classroom by working on keeping students on task, answering any questions they had, and composing note packets for the upcoming two sections. Motivation from a handful of students in each period is still lacking, and trying to get them to do anything at all has been a struggle.
